Friday wrap: Summer’s over edition

Everything that happened on the blog last week with a couple extras.Too much? Not enough? Just right? Let me know what you think.

Welcome to the new subscribers! I’m doing something that resonates, this list grew by like 30% from last week. Hope it’s worth it.

Feel free to give me hell if it doesn’t! Feedback is welcome and encouraged. Reach out.

READ

I put together a list of six short stories I’ve loved lately. They all deal with substance abuse or childhood trauma in some sense, but they’re all very different and memorable. The weirdest of them is A Story in Which Something Happens, which goes off in some very, very unexpected directions.

Service by Sarah Gilmartin is one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s an Irish #metoo book about a superstar chef. Here’s a taster, from LitHub.

A Day in the Life of Abed Salama by Nathan Thrall is the Israel/Palestine history lesson you didn’t know you needed. It’s a gorgeous, heartbreaking, eye-opening book, and it’s not a long one either.

Clarice Lispector is weird and challenging. The Hour of the Star was less than 100 pages and I’m still processing it, almost a week later.

The Power Broker turned 50 this week, it’s a book I’d recommend to anyone. Ever. It’s amazing.

CONSUME BETTER

If you are the subscriber who uses the ‘Kill the newsletter’ app, thank you. It’s a handy thing for anyone that uses an RSS feedreader.

I’m also working on a Facebook page for the thing, against my better judgement. If that’s how you wanna follow, click here (there’s nothing there yet but it’s coming!).

LISTEN

No Beauty is a band from Hamilton, Ontario. No Beauty Will Remain is their debut record, and if you like erudite indie rock, they’ve got you covered.

Emmeline (London) makes downtempo alternative hiphop, and she’s also an accomplished poet. I promise her music is much more appealing than that sentence.

Better Joy (Manchester) is a band that I think you’ll be hearing a lot more from. Their indie rock sound is really well-developed for a band that’s only released 5 singles.

Michy Tree (London) - ‘pop punk’ is usually used to describe things I don’t like at all, but Michy Tree’s stuff has an edge to it that I dig.

8MM (California) is an older band, their first album came out almost 20 years ago. This week they released their first record in a decade - it’s dark, moody trip-hop.

Plus:

Singles from blog faves Luvcat, Lucky Break, HONESTY, Ain’t, Honeyglaze and Sunnsetter, and new discoveries from Slumber, El Tee, SKOFF, PONY, and Adore

Hear it all on Apple Music or Spotify

Newsletter sneak peek: I had a very long drive last night and listened to the recent NEW YORK record. It’s tremendous, and you can expect to see it here next week. Also new records from Burr Oak, Kaeto, Honeyglaze and Lea Thomas to check out this weekend.
