hello from the road
Everything that happened on the blog last week with a couple extras.Too much? Not enough? Let me know what you think.
Hi! You’re here! Thank you.
Gonna keep this brief. Bad weather has upended everything and I’m currently living in a hotel a long way from home for a lot longer than I intended to. Hotel living is excellent, and I missed it. The wifi here stinks and my office right now is inside a client’s boardroom. I missed road life. It’s the best.
Next week should be nice and chill, I have a couple surprises cooked up for the last week before I hibernate for the holidays, and recharge with new stuff for 2025.
Here’s what I got up to this week:
Read
There were six short pieces in the link stash on Monday. Read The Stranger by Robin Becker, then go read the rest of the links.
Books:
No One Gets To Fall Apart by Sarah LaBrie is a super short memoir that doesn’t skimp on story. Her writing on her mother’s struggles and how it affected her is fantastic.
Orbital by Samantha Harvey blew me away with its’ language and depth of feeling. Just gorgeous and a deserving Booker winner.
Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs just blew. I try to be constructive even when I don’t like a book, but this one felt like fabulism and exploitation.
Extra credit:
This piece from the Neverhungover newsletter has been in my head for more than a week. If you think of current American culture as a collection of scams, suddenly you see it everywhere you look.
Don’t take your golden gun to clown school, I guess
This profile of a schoolteacher at a fancy private school in NYC who turned out to be less-than-perfect is full of surprises.
Got something to share? Want your first reader or listener?
I’m always looking for good writing and good music. If you have something to recommend, either your own stuff or something you’ve found, lay it on me.
