Long week, short newsletter

New music, book reviews, short stories and more from blog this week

Plus lots of links to other good stuff that didn’t (yet)Too much? Not enough? Let me know what you think.

Hi! You’re here! Thank you.

Not a lot to say this week - the news and my work have been conspiring to keep me too busy to post much. I missed a full day this week, which is unusual. I don’t have any news-y things to post today. Maybe in the Monday post.

On a positive note, my work this week has involved learning a ton about spacecraft and solar power. I’m very lucky to have a job I love, and no boss.

I also stopped posting to X this week. Obvious reasons. Consider joining Bluesky, it’s quite a nice place to be. And find me there when you do, I post there a lot more than on Instagram.

Here’s what hit the blog this week:

On the Blog

Reading:

Books: Who’s Afraid of Gender by Judith Butler was not an easy read, but it was a useful one. More than a week after I finished it, and I’m still thinking about it every day. Can’t recommend highly enough. The Werner Herzog memoir is like sitting at the pub with the coolest old dude.

Stories: Five stories this week - the first is creative nonfiction by someone who is likely going blind, and it’s a doozy. The other stories concern things like adolescent friendships, divorce and the apocalypse. They’re good: read em here.

Listening:

Three musical artists this week: Stem Champ’s record is an indie-rock ode to prairie living (Edmonton), voyeur is NYC indie rock that leans into some real grunge, and Gen is moody, dark Montreal EDM.

The Setlist has standout tracks are from Pittsburgh’s Animal Scream, Amsterdam’s FIEP and Brooklyn punks SHAGGO. It’s shorter than usual. Maybe I’ll have more balance next week.

Hit the red button below to dig in. It’s 18 songs, 57 minutes. Apple Music or Spotify

Next Week

I’ll be fully rested. All translated fiction books next week: Jhumpa Lahiri, Olga Tokarczuk and Alia Trabucco Zeran. That’s pure coincidence. Plus a couple of awesome Canadian films you can watch for free (legally) online.

Thanks for being here.
